Censorship

Censorship is very attractive to some people, especially the guilty. Government security classification is abused by politicians and civil servants as a matter of routine. It has a lot to do with covering up corruption and incompetence. In the scientific field however it is not so clear cut. Research grants can ride on telling the right story. Censorship is an aspect of lying and manipulation. If people don't know in the first place there is no need to lie about it.

The Wikipedia covers the ground rather thoroughly. Read it with a sceptic eye. It is a propaganda machine in its own right.
