2004 - Post Mortem

You might feel disposed to remember other things and those who read the gutter press certainly will.  Private Eye continues to tell us things that other, more pretentious journals choose not to. It cannot just be the English law of libel.

January
Lord Hutton informed us that Her Majesty's Government was not dishonourable, underhand or duplicitous. Presumably that was what HMG wanted to hear. Harold Shipman, with at least 215 murders to his credit, had the last laugh. He hung himself.

March
Islamics got 191 kills in Spain. Spain bottled out of Iraq so it worked.

April
Miss Beverley Hughes resigned from HMG after fraudulent immigration applications surfaced but presumably she was not dishonourable, underhand or duplicitous.

May
Large scale American torture in Iraq came to light, at Abu Ghraib.

June
UKIP won 12 seats, the Tories got 27 and Labour 19 in European elections.

July
Lord Butler told us that HMG's dossier on Iraq was deeply flawed.   He did not tell us that Her Majesty's Government was not dishonourable, underhand or duplicitous. The International Criminal Court told the Jews to take down their Berlin Wall. The Jews did not.

September
The Scottish Parliament building was opened. It cost £430 million rather than the original £40 million estimate. Some things don't change and government incompetence is one of them. Presumably they were not being dishonourable, underhand or duplicitous.

November
George was re-elected as President in America. The left were very disgruntled. 150,000 Americans attacked Fallujah. Fallujah lost.

December
A tsunami killed better than 100,000 in the Sumatra area. Blunkett had to resign for telling fibs, fornication and bunging his girl friend a £180 ticket. Presumably he was one of  Her Majesty's Government who  was dishonourable, underhand or duplicitous, Lord Hutton notwithstanding.  PIRA nicked £20 million from a bank in Belfast; a sound approach to pension funds - rob them rather than vice versa.

Lord Butler on Blair
Lord Butler is the head of the Civil Service and  the man who knows, who is trusted, who is utterly discreet. For him to tell The Spectator that Blair is a dreadful prime minister must be unprecedented and cannot be dismissed as mere disgruntlement.

The Great Crime Spree of 2004 - Rape, torture, murder, war crimes, and treason – your government at work
A very sound look at an ugly year. Does your newspaper tell you just how bad it is? Nor does mine. That is why I don't buy it any more. Tit for tat.
